Austen\u2019s Christian faith was a deeply integral part of who she was. She was a Christian who lived a Christian life. Religion not only strongly influenced the manner in which Jane Austen lived but also how she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Religion was at the core of Jane Austen\u2019s family life. She likely prayed each morning and evening, also joining her family in daily prayers which she penned. As noted by Fanny Price in <em>Mansfield Park<\/em>, \u2018A whole family assembling regularly for the purpose of prayer is fine.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Jane Austen\u2019s brother Henry said she \u2018was thoroughly religious and devout; fearful of giving any offence to God, and incapable of feeling it towards any fellow creature. On serious subjects she was well instructed, both by reading and meditation, and her opinions accorded strictly with those of our Established Church.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>One of Austen\u2019s most treasured possessions was a topaz amber cross received from her brother Charles in 1801. The fact Charles chose a cross rather than a locket signified Jane Austen\u2019s deep Christian faith. The significance of this gift to Jane Austen is reflected in <em>Mansfield Park<\/em>, when William Price bestows a similar cross on Fanny.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div id=\"block_03cfda376205ea1fa9d3f6d35da2822a\" class=\"  bg-white-style  relative wp-block-acf-std-image-text\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"max-w-7xl m-auto  lg:py-14 xl:pb-20 xl:pt-20 lg:pl-0\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"flex flex-wrap  items-start relative \">\n\t\t\t<div class=\" lg:w-1\/2 pl-5 pt-5 pb-10 pr-5 lg:pr-0 z-20 lg:px-0 lg:py-0 relative  lg:pl-0 lg:pr-20 lg:order-1 order-2 \">\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"content slowFadeUp\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p><em>Mansfield Park<\/em> is Jane Austen\u2019s most religious novel, positively presenting the theme of religion and depicting the model clergyman Edmund Bertram, who is quite different to the comical clergyman Mr. Collins in <em>Pride and Prejudice.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Austen referred to the failings of the nation&#8217;s manners and morals critically in her novels, for example through the character Mary Crawford in <em>Mansfield Park<\/em>, who speaks of adultery as \u2018acceptable as long as it was discreet\u2019 and furthermore speaks disparagingly of religion, opposing Edmund\u2019s view of adultery as sin. Mary belittles Edmund, mockingly quipping that she will next hear of him as \u2018a missionary or a Methodist\u2019. The sin of gambling is used to convey the moral failings of Pride and Prejudice&#8217;s villain George Wickham, whilst John Thorpe\u2019s boasting of excessive drinking in <em>Northanger Abbey<\/em> demonstrates his unsavoury character.<\/p>\n<p>Jane Austen contrasts such behaviours with more wholesome characters such as Fanny Price and Mr. Knightley, presenting moral growth as compatible with Christian ethics. As noted by Rachel Dodge, Austen\u2019s prayers contain meanings \u2018that reach far beyond elegant words or graceful phrases. They are personal and reflective, passionate and thorough.\u2019 Her prayers illustrate devotion to the faith that defined her life and influenced the tropes of human goodness and morality which permeate her beloved novels.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2026May we now, and on each return<\/em><br \/>\n<em>of night, consider how the past<\/em><br \/>\n<em>day has been spent by us, what have<\/em><br \/>\n<em>been our prevailing thoughts,<\/em><br \/>\n<em>words, and actions during
